ROUTINES

Human being is a complex creature. There is no single word that can fully describe him; a word that can encompass his personality, nature, beliefs, dreams and inspirations, actions, words or physique. But to some extent this complex creature tend to be predictable. Each individual is unique. But the response to some circumstances by these individuals is quasi-similar and almost uniform. This predictability stems from habits. Indeed it has been said that human beings is a habit creature. What you did today there is a high possibility almost to certainty that you will repeat the same thing tomorrow. For example, today i went to a grocery store known as Bei Poa General Store. I'm almost certain that tomorrow i will go there for my shopping though my neighborhood has many grocery stores with some within a short walking distance. Forget about good customer relations. And how can i conclude that the grocery store i visited has the best customer service or mode of payment than others and i have never gone to them? The method of transportation that you used today is the same that you had used yesterday and i can bet my next month salary that you will take it tomorrow. Though you could have used train from Nairobi's Eastland to come to Nairobi CBD which is faster and less costly, you took public means and you encounter traffic jams. But what can you do? It is just your habit which we term it as routine. Few things make us change our routine unless it is under extreme emergencies. And what happens when our routine is disrupted? We feel insecure. Our security comes from our habits and habits of others. What is your reaction or what thoughts passes your mind when your work colleague who arrives not later than 8 am has no arrived by 9 am. All manner of scenarios crawl your mind to the extent of fear. Often times i wonder when you hear a demonstration against the upgrading of a road, is it due negative environmental impact, the contractor has corruption history or is it due disruption of the way we use when traveling to our place of work when that road will be blocked. And this brings me to human beings and change. Any humans is hesitant to embrace a change that will affect his routine. But change is what human beings need to evolve. Those creatures like dinosaurs that resisted change became extinct. Those human beings resisting change will pave way for those embracing change and become their subjects. For nature favours and nurtures the progressive but discards the weak and non-progressive ones.
