My Liberal Views
I like listening to people discuss matters of interest. The topics range from simple personal arguments such as dos and do'nts when dating to sports, business and politics. And as you would expect everyone has and says his opinion. I am a firm believer in the freedom of expression. And as such I listen and respect everyone's view however divergent it may be from my own. That's why it is very disappointing, dangerous and bad precedent for this government to arrest, intimidate and harass journalists and bloggers who incidentally are its harshest critics. For any government to be taken seriously it must respect, listen and protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen including its critics. But that is a story for another day.
All hell breaks loose when politics comes into play. Reason, facts, tolerance ethics and morality, respect and truth are relegated to the back seat; lies, abuse, fiction, radicalism and greed take the center stage. It is quite baffling if you think about it. Reasonable, intelligent, educate and respected men and women become robot-like: follow their leader, often of their own, blindly. No asking him relevant questions, no holding him accountable and no criticising him or her.
To defend a corrupt politician who has embezzled money meant for the poor's health is like defending a radical terrorist who has killed and maimed hundreds of people. This official is even hundred times dangerous than that deluded criminal. He or she should be treated with disdain and disgust he deserves. To make matters worse these crooks come to us in five years to ask for our votes. It not only shows how they think of us but an insult to our intelligence.
To defend crooked politicians and officials who have plundered money meant for the hungry is to defend the most wanted bank robber. No criticising and holding them accountable is to endorse their crooked behavior and spit on the hungry. And in a country that deludes itself to be religious it amounts to previous sins.
Where did the rain start beating us? Long time ago, I would say. When we glorify crime and their perpetrators, we should expect nothing less. A man eat man society has no place in our modern world. Even our so-called national heroes were glorified crooks in their times, who mentored the current crop of crooks, who in turn are mentoring the future crooks. And so criminal dynasty goes on and on. And I have no apologies saying that on top the mountain.
Were we to respect the rights and freedoms of others, the welfare of the minorities and the marginalized, equality for all people with no regard to their tribe, race, religion or nationalit, provide opportunity to the young and unemployed, arbitrate all conflicts and come up conflict resolution mechanism, criminalize, criticize, hold accountable our elected leaders, rise above partisan politics and embrace bipartisan inclusive of everyone, have ethical and people of integrity holding public offices and vote decisively and issue-based elections; I can assure you, and you can take this to the bank, that ninety nine percent of our problems would be solved.
A herlucean task, isn't it?
