WHAT IS OUR WORLD COMING TO?           There is uncertainty all over the world when it comes to politics and international engagements. It has become harder to predict the next event in any country or policies a new government when it ascends to power will adopt. It is a time of great change all over the world and the question becomes: are we ready for the change or are we waiting for the change to engulf us slowly to a point of no return?           In Africa, it started with Nigeria with the defeat of Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 presidential elections, conceded defeat and thereby becoming the first to do so. Ghana held its elections recently and the change of power was peaceful signalling the maturity of democracy in Africa. In Gambia, a dictator that had ruled the country for decades was hounded out of power after initially vowing to stay on power after being defeated in elections. In south Af...

                Kenya is a constitutional democracy. Not just a democracy. A democracy that is guided and protected by a constitution. In a democracy, the majority rules. It doesn’t matter if that majority is wrong or corrupt. What that majority decides becomes laws and policies of that country. Whether those laws are oppressive, unethical, immoral or outright wrong. The will of the majority has the way. The minority become subjects of the majority, a segment more seen as dissenting rather than an integral part of the community. The Constitution of Kenya, 2010 gave Kenya a democracy that is inclusive with respect for all segments of the society, respect for rule of law and rights and freedoms of people.                 So, it is disheartening to hear political leaders in this country shout in pews, atop mountains and on campaign trail about tyranny of numbers.   I like listening to people discuss matters of interest. The topics range from simple personal arguments such as dos and do'nts when dating to sports, business and politics. And as you would expect everyone has and says his opinion. I am a firm believer in the freedom of expression. And as such I listen and respect everyone's view however divergent it may be from my own. That's why it is very disappointing, dangerous and bad precedent for this government to arrest, intimidate and harass journalists and bloggers who incidentally are its harshest critics. For any government to be taken seriously it must respect, listen and protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen including its critics. But that is a story for another day.    All hell breaks loose when politics comes into play. DAY TWO Fact 2: There are at least 3,000 cases of reported cyber-crimes cases in Kenya every year. CHAPTER 6 I like watching birds fly in the air. How they would glide in the air balanced on their wings, rise high up in the air, circle a little and then glide down. Sometimes I think it is their way of exercising their freedom. Or they could be having fun. I wonder how it would feel doing that. I imagine what it would feel skydiving: jumping from a plane, free falling, feel wind whip you around, the excitement of seeing the ground loom towards you, the fear of being several miles up in the air, forgetting all your earthly problems, the weight of deploying the chute and the slow falling as you watch the earth with its beautiful scenery and its problems coming towards you. As I continue writing my short i would like to reiterate one thing: All stories I post on this blog are rough drafts and there will have several mistakes either grammatical or otherwise. I will have edited these posts but there is only much you can do editing your work. That is where you come in. Point out those mistakes and I will correct them.  All characters, events, places and/ or entities are all fictional. Any resemblance to people, places or entities in real life is purely coincidental.  Now I must get back writing. The second part of the story awaits to be written. Expect it to be posted by Friday.

DAY ONE CHAPTER 1 Fact 1: The most prevalent violent crimes in Kenya are violent robberies and carjackings. The most prevalent crimes against children in Kenya are: sexual violence and defilement; child labor and child exploitation.  Francis looked at the spreadsheets before him for the hundredth time in a span of half an hour since he sat down at his desk. Every time he tried to concentrate on the financial statements before him, his mind always returned to the envelope and its contents all of which were still on his breakfast. He looked at the leather black briefcase and recoiled as if it contained radioactive material. He concentrated his gaze on the worn corners of the case and reprimanded himself for not replacing it. He had promised his wife to buy a new one but hadn’t gotten around to do it. That was a month ago.
