ANY NEWS IS NOT NEWS

In an era when google is a verb, smartphones have become an extension of our hands, Facebook has de-socialized human interaction and Twitter has become our main source of news;  there is a war going on in our midst. Not many are aware of this war but many have been casualties of this war. Most still have been drafted into this war without realizing it. It is a war that has far reaching implications to the foundation on which human society and civilisation is built upon. This is the information warfare. Or by its familiar name fake news. In the run-up to Kenya’s general election in August, media reported that the two leading coalitions had hired the services of reputable consulting companies. One of this consulting company is the Cambridge Analytica. While officially the company was hired to help the Jubilee party research on voter dynamics and polling, unofficially it used psychological manipulation by designing ads on social media by use of personal data on those sites. AFRICA: EUROPE’S GREATEST LIE

Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh American journalist and explorer credited with exploration and mapping of central Africa. He wrote his encounters in two books among them Through the Dark Continent (1878) coining the term dark continent that many atrocities, suffering and exploitation would be committed. His achievements as a journalist across the world and explorer in Africa are well documented. His cruelty, racism, inhumane treatment as well as contempt for black-skinned people probably outweigh any significant achievement he claimed. In a matter of a century or so, the Europeans forgot the wonders and beauty that the Romans spoke about Africa as a land of rolling savannas, green covered mountains and meandering rivers; they forgot about wealth that the Arabs, Persians and Indians came to carve out in the various international trade taking place in Africa; they forgot about the great and mighty army of Kush that couldn’t even be defeated by superpower Rome; they forgot about th...

Job Well Done

From 1671 to 1684 an Italian astronomer living in France named Giovanni Domenico Cassini discovered four moons of planet Saturn. A quarter of a century earlier Dutch mathematician and astronomer named Christiaan Huygens had discovered Titan, Saturn largest moon as well as gave explanation for the rings of Saturn. Three centuries later in 1997 a spaceprobe was launched to honour these two great scientists for their contribution in advancement of human knowledge of his universe. This mission came to be known as the Huygens - Cassini mission. It is a collaboration between US National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA) and Italian Space Agency (ASI) and funded to the tune of USD 4 billions. Launched from Cape Canaveral in 1997, the probe entered Saturn's atmosphere in 2004. The Huygens module separated from the Cassini in the same year and proceeded to land on Titan, Saturn largest moon. The cassini module continued to orbit Saturn and for thirteen ye...

THE FOURTH ESTATE NEEDS TO WAKE UP

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF STALKING STALKING -           This is unwanted or obsessive attention or contact by an individual or a group towards another person. Specifically, this unwanted obsessive attention is geared towards harassing and intimidating the other person. In quite a number of legal jurisdictions stalking is a criminal offence. INTRODUCTION The definition of stalking and what really constitutes stalking vary according to discipline and jurisdictions. This difficulty in having a common definition stems from the fact that psychology and psychiatry look at stalking from different perspectives. Some actions that may be construed as stalking in one legal jurisdiction maybe legal in another. For example, to gather information, sending gifts. It can be an accumulation of a series of actions which in themselves are legal such as calling on the phone or sending an email. PSYCHOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR A)     STALKERS Some ...
WHAT IS OUR WORLD COMING TO?           There is uncertainty all over the world when it comes to politics and international engagements. It has become harder to predict the next event in any country or policies a new government when it ascends to power will adopt. It is a time of great change all over the world and the question becomes: are we ready for the change or are we waiting for the change to engulf us slowly to a point of no return?           In Africa, it started with Nigeria with the defeat of Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 presidential elections, conceded defeat and thereby becoming the first to do so. Ghana held its elections recently and the change of power was peaceful signalling the maturity of democracy in Africa. In Gambia, a dictator that had ruled the country for decades was hounded out of power after initially vowing to stay on power after being defeated in elections. In south Af...
